Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL), also known Otto Lilienthal Airport is the main international airport serving the capital of Germany, however it comes only as the fourth busiest airport in Germany with more than 20 million passengers annually. It is also one of two airports in Berlin, the second being Berlin Schönefeld which mostly handles flights of low-cost carriers. Berlin Tegel Airport is located in Tegel, 8 kilometres northwest of Berlin centre.  

How to get from Berlin Tegel Airport to Berlin

Airport bus

The airport is connected with Berlin by several bus lines. Tegel Airport belongs to tariff area B and a daily bus ticket costs €7. Tickets can be bought in buses, directly from the driver or from the machine. Machines in buses accept coins only. Other ticket machines accept banknotes as well.

  • TXL Express bus – runs to Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), Beusselstraße S-Bahn station and Alexanderplatz. The first bus departs from the airport at 04:00 and last one at 00:30. Buses run every 10 minutes.
  • X9 Express bus – this is the bus you will take if you need U-Bahn station (Jakob Kaiser),  Jungfernheide S-Bahn and Regional Express station and Berlin Zoo
  • Bus line 109 – this line basically has the similar route as X9 but it takes more time because it stops also at Kurfürstendamm (the famous Berlin avenue) and at Charlottenburg station
  • Bus line 108 – runs to Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Osloer Straße U-Bahn stations.

NOTE: All buses are operated by local bus company BVG and you can find their ticket offices everywhere around the city, just look for “yellow” kiosk.

Taxi service

If you carry a lot of luggage, using public transport may not be the best option, that’s why you can always use a taxi. Airport taxis can be found in front of Terminal A, C and E. You will recognize taxi drivers as they will have “Taxi Service” sign on their uniforms. The average taxi fare to Berlin will cost you around €25.

Transfer

In case you need a transport to a place outside Berlin, then hiring a private transfer would be the best option. Book a transfer online and your driver will wait for you outside the airport holding a cardboard with your name.

Renting a car at Berlin Tegel Airport

Not really a fan of public transport or you just prefer exploring on your own? You can rent a car at Tegel Airport without a problem in many airport offices such as Avis, Buchbinder, Enterprise, Europcar, Sixt or Hertz. If you have no time for filling out forms and other stuff before they handle you the key, we advise you to book a car online.

For bigger groups of people traveling it would be a good idea to book a coach prior to the flight. Book your bus in advance so you can arrange all the details with the bus rental company such as pick-up point, etc.

  • I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?
    It depends on how late your arrival is. The last bus departs at  00:30 and the first one at 04:00 so for the period between the last and the first morning departure you will probably need to hire a taxi.
  • I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?
    There’s one nearby hotel where you can stay overnight – Mercure Airport Hotel Berlin Tegel. It has free Wi-Fi, outdoor pool and it is located near the bus stop so you can reach it by bus 109. You just need to exit at the next bus stop after the airport.
  • I would like to spend one day in Berlin in between flights. Is that possible?
    Sure thing. Buses run frequently throughout the day and it takes around 20-30 minutes to reach the city centre.
  • I am continuing my journey outside Berlin. Are there any direct lines from the airport to other cities?
    There’s one international bus route, from Tegel Airport to Szczecin. For other cities, you’ll have to reach Berlin Hauptbahnhof first. Check all available bus routes from Berlin to other cities on getbybus.com
  • Can I exchange money at the airport to pay for my transfer?
    Of course, there are numerous cash machines and few exchange offices for you to change your money. But as always, it is better to change money before the flight as exchange rates might be bad at the airport.
