Keflavik International Airport (KEF), also known as Reykjavik-Keflavik Airport, is the largest airport in Iceland and the country’s most important hub for international transportation. It is located approximately 50 km from the city’s centre (the city is also served by another, smaller Reykjavik Airport only 2 km from the capital and only serves internal flights within Iceland and to Greenland). The main carriers at the airport are Icelandair and WOW air, used exclusively for international flights. Annually, it handles over 9.5 million passengers.
How to get from Reykjavik-Keflavik Airport to Reykjavik
Airport shuttle
Gray Line Iceland operates the return service between KEF airport and both Reykjavik and Akureyri.
- The departures to Reykjavik are scheduled 35 – 45 minutes after each arriving flight, as well as the transport from the city to the airport.
- There is one departure daily to and from Akureyri, 3 – 7 days a week, depending on a season.
- It is strongly suggested to book your tickets online. When booking, you can select to be dropped off at their bus terminal at Holtagarðar 10 (terminal to terminal) or at any of the more than 160 hotels and guesthouses in the greater Reykjavik area (door to door).
Flybus: The Flybus is located outside the airport. It leaves 35 – 40 minutes after arrival of each flight. To make sure you don’t miss your bus, keep an eye on the screen in the terminal or ask for information at the Flybus information desk at the arrival hall. The journey takes 45 minutes and, upon request, the bus will stop at Hotel Viking in Hafnarfjörður and at Aktu Taktu in Garðabær. Transfers are available to all major hotels, the Youth Hostel, Laugardalur camping area and the domestic airport. For these transfers the driver will ask you to board smaller busses.
- The day before leaving Iceland, please ask your hotel lobby to book a Flybus transfer for your journey to the airport.
Public bus
Bus route nr. 55 at Strætó in Iceland takes you to and from the airport all the way to central Reykjavík (BSÍ – Bus terminal) nine times a day. Timetable
Taxi
If you prefer more comfortable ride, consider taking a taxi instead of using public transport. Taxis are situated outside the terminal. Here you can check out the offers, compare prices or book a taxi in advance.
Transfer
If you don’t like using the public transport and hesitate to take a taxi, consider booking a private transfer which will wait for you on the airport and take you to your destination. The transfer company will send a professional driver to pick you up. You can even pre-order a child safety seat if you’re travelling with a child.
Renting a car at Reykjavik-Keflavik Airport
Rent your car directly at the airport in one of the offices of rental companies like Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Budget. The car rental offices are located at the Arrivals Level. Still, the best way to rent car is to do it online, that way you’ll avoid the possible queue.

If you are travelling in a large group, you should consider renting a bus prior to your arrival so that the rental agency can prepare all the details and advise you on the meeting and pick up points at the airport.

No, there are scheduled airport shuttle and Flybus departures after each arriving flight, so you have about half an hour to find the bus station. In case you miss all those buses, you can always take a taxi which are available 24/7 and are parked outside the terminal building.

The closest one is Hotel Aurora Star, only 2 km from the airport, then Base Hotel almost 3 km from Keflavik, a little bit further away you can stay at Airport Inn (3.3 km), 5 km from the airport there is Hotel Jazz.
