Tallinn Airport (Tallinna lennujaam), also known as Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport, is the largest Estonian airport situated near the Ülemiste Lake, just 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) southeast of the capital city. It serves as a hub for national airline Nordica, and a secondary hub for AirBaltic and LOT Polish Airlines. The airport is open to both domestic and international flights, and it has been also used in military purposes. In 2017 the airport handled more than 2.6 million passengers, the greatest number so far.

How to get from tallinn Airport to Tallinn

Tram

You can reach the city center by tram which is the new way of transport since last year. The tramline no. 4 is located near the terminal, and the trams mostly go with 6 minutes intervals. From Monday to Saturday, the first tram arrives at the airport at 5:25 am and 5:45 am on Sundays. The last tram from the airport to the city center leaves at 00:45 am. In this case, most of the passengers who arrive late will be able to get to the city by public transport. The ticket for one person costs 2 €, and the journey takes approximately 15-17 minutes.

Bus

There are also bus stops at the airport, right next to the tram stop. There are two lines which connect the airport and the city:

Tallinn City Transport Bus no. 2 offers a connection to the city center, and makes a stop at the airport in both directions. Buses go with 20 minutes intervals. See timetable

You can buy the ticket from the bus driver, at the entrance to the bus, but also from the ticket vending machines. The price for one person is 2 €. While staying in Tallinn, there is also an option of buying a Smartcard (Public Transport Card) – a plastic farecard which lets you use the electronic ticket system of the public transport. You can get the card online or at the R-kiosk, and the price of the service is 2 €. You load your card with enough credit and can add more anywhere the tickets are being sold. The possession of a card provides you with cheaper fares in public transport.

NOTE: When getting to the airport, not all buses stop at the airport, so make sure you choose the right line. Always notify your bus driver of your wish to stop when entering a bus!

Taxi Service

If you prefer a more comfortable type of transfer, consider taking a taxi. For reasonable and reliable prices, try to find the official taxi partners of Tallinn Airport such as Tulika Takso, Tallink Takso, Airport Taxi, and Tulika Premium. The cars of the companies wait for the passengers in front of the terminal doors. The ride to the city center will cost you no more than 15 €.

NOTE: The most important thing to know about taxis in Estonia is that the taxi fares are NOT limited by the law. Because of that, taxis which are not an official airport taxi can vary in fare prices. In that case, we recommend that, before you start the ride, you ask the driver if he can inform you about the estimated fare, and also, make sure it is acceptable for you.

Transfer

If you don’t like using the public transport and hesitate to take a taxi, consider booking a private transfer which will wait for you on the airport and take you to your destination. The transfer company will send a professional driver to pick you up. You can even pre-order a child safety seat if you’re travelling with a child.

Renting a Car at Tallinn Airport

For those who would prefer to reach the city and explore the area on their own, the best option is to rent a car directly at the airport. There are several car hire companies that operate at the Tallinn Airport such as Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, Hertz etc. Compare their rental prices and save your time by booking your car online.

I arrive late at the airport. Will it be a problem for me to get to the city?

No, the latest tram from the airport to the Tallinn city center leaves at 00:45 am. But if for some reason you arrive later than that, you can always take a taxi or a private transfer.

I have an early morning departure from the airport, are there any airport hotels I can stay at?

There is no airport hotel, but there are several hotels you can stay at which are only around 1 kilometer away such as Lillekula Hotel, Hotel Nepi, Kreutzwald Hotel Tallinn and Radisson Blu Hotel Olumpia.

I would like to visit Tallinn in between flights. Is that possible?

Yes, the distance between the airport and the Tallinn city center is only 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), and the city can be reached for less than 20 minutes. There are baggage lockers available at the airport, located on the ground floor of the passenger terminal. The price is 3 EUR/24 h for a larger locker, and 2 EUR/24 h for a smaller one. Can I exchange money at the airport to pay for my transfer?

Yes, there are currency exchanges. Also, Swedbank, Nordea/Sampo and SEB ATMs are located in the arrivals hall of the passenger terminal.

I am continuing my journey outside Tallinn. Are there any direct lines to other destinations?

There are some long-distance buses which make a stop at the airport. Intercity bus line ‘’Täistunniekspress’’ and intercity bus line ‘’158’’ depart from Tallinn to the second biggest city in Estonia, Tartu, but have different routes. The second one stops at the airport only once a day. For some other destinations you can always get to the main station in Tallinn and continue your journey.
