Thessaloniki Airport “Macedonia”, also known as Mikra Airport, is an international airport located 13km south of the Thessaloniki city centre in Thermi.
It‘s Greece’s third largest airport after Athens and Heraklion airports. It is the main airport of the northern part of the country and serves the city of Thessaloniki, the popular tourist destination, and other regional cities.
The record year for the airport was 2019 when it served 6,897,057 passengers. In 2020, due to COVID-19, the traffic fell a little more over 50% but in 2021, the numbers have gone up.

How to get from Thessaloniki Airport to Thessaloniki
There are several ways to get to the centre. Below, you’ll find all available transportation options.
Bus
The OASTH buses connect the airport and the Macedonia Intercity Bus Station (via city center) throughout the day by the 1X and 1N lines. The journey time is 40-50 minutes. Also, lines 79, 79A and 79B connect Halkidikis Bus Station and A.S. IKEA pass through the airport.
- Line 1X departs 2-3 times per hour during the day. Along the route, you can get off in the city centre (Platia Aristotelous) and at the main railway station of Thessaloniki (Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos).
- Line 1N operates during the night.
- Line 79 is a direct line from the airport to A.S. IKEA with departures from 6:05 am to 10:30 pm.
- Line 79A amd 79B are circular routes connecting A.S. IKEA and Halkidikis Bus Station via airport.
- A single ticket costs around 2€ (students and seniors 1€). You can buy the ticket from the ticket machine on the bus, but keep in mind that the machine does not return spare change.

Taxi
If you’re up for a more cozy ride, then take a taxi instead of the public bus. There is a taxi rank outside the Arrivals Hall. One way ride takes about 30 minutes and costs around 20€.
Be patient during the high season since it may take some time for you to find a taxi.
Transfer
If you don’t like using public transport and hesitate to take a taxi, consider booking a private transfer which will wait for you at the airport and take you to your destination.
The transfer company will send a professional driver to pick you up. You can even pre-order a child safety seat if you’re travelling with a child.
Renting a car at Thessaloniki Airport
Rent your car directly at the airport in one of the offices of rental companies like Hertz Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Budget.
The car rental offices are located at the Arrivals Level. Still, the best way to rent a car is to do it online, that way you’ll avoid the possible queue.

If you are travelling with a large group, you should consider renting a bus prior to your arrival so that the rental agency can prepare all the details and advise you on the meeting and pick-up points at the airport.

No, it shouldn’t be a problem. The lines 1X and 1N operate throughout the day and night, but besides that, you have taxis at the taxi rank at your disposal, a one-way ticket will cost you around 20€ for a 30 min drive.
Of course, there are few hotels to choose from. The closest one is the Perea Hotel 3.7 km away from the airport, favourite among foreign travellers for their cozy rooms and very friendly staff, as well as for its vicinity to Perea nightlife.
One km further away is Avra Hotel, only 1 minute away from the beach, which makes it ideal both for leisure and business. Your other options are hotels Astoria and Egnatica Palace, both 13km from the airport.
Yes, the journey to city centre from the airport takes only half an hour, and the buses which operate on the route drive throughout the day, so it should be no problem to make a short trip there.
