Travel with Luggage

Luggage safety on the bus

Travelling by bus is in most cases quite enjoyable, but depending on the country you are travelling to, bringing luggage might require a bit more precaution than you are used to in your home country.

The first and most important thing is to make sure that you bring all valuables and documents onto the bus and keep them close to you during the whole trip. Most buses will allow you to bring hand luggage onto the bus, but due to the limited space, you might not be able to bring the same size of suitcase as you are used to when you travel by plane, so make sure to have a smaller bag for your valuables.

NOTE: If a driver claims your hand luggage is too big to bring on the bus, please remember, the first and outmost concern and obligation of the driver is always the passengers’ safety, which can be a reason why a driver would not let you bring a certain size of suitcase / bag onto the bus.

Luggage for the compartment/hold of the bus

Leaving the luggage at the hold of a bus is normally not a problem, but to avoid experiencing one of the seldom times when luggage gets lost (stolen), the following precautions are advisable.

  • Put a clearly visible name tag on your suitcase.
  • When you hand over your luggage to the driver make sure that he attaches a strip to the suitcase and hands you a receipt.
  • Make sure to actually see that your suitcase is loaded onto the hold, and remember where it was placed.
  • If possible sit above the compartment where your suitcase is.
  • If the bus has stops on the way, pay attention to the people getting off the bus at those stops, if they look suspicious, keep an eye on the compartment which has your suitcase.
  • Make sure to buy travel insurance when going abroad as this is the best way to recoup your losses.

Are suitcase thefts a general problem on buses?

Luckily, suitcase thefts, in the majority of the countries, are not something to be worried about, but people with less good intentions can be found everywhere, so keeping your ears and eyes open is never a bad idea!

Usually, a theft / loss of a suitcase can be divided into 3 groups

  1. The first one is actually not theft, or at least not an intentional one, as when travelling by plane it happens that people have suitcases which look alike, and as most people do not open them on the spot, it occurs that passengers grab the wrong suitcase. Obviously it is annoying but the suitcase is always returned.
  2. The second scenario is when you are travelling on a route with stops in between, here it happens that people getting off intentionally take a “wrong” suitcase.
  3. A theft by loading and offloading is also a situation where people with bad intention can take advantage of the situation.

If it should happen that your luggage is stolen, make sure to report the stolen goods to the police as soon as possible; when doing so request a copy of the police report, so that you have documentation for reporting the incident to the bus company and potentially later also to the insurance company.

Feel free to leave a comment below if you have any additional advice in relation to avoiding theft of luggage when travelling by bus!

      Hi there,

My partner and I are planning to bus from Kotor to Shkoder, however we have 2 suitcases and 2 surfboard bags. Will we need to pay extra for our luggage?

      Many thanks.

      • Maja   •

        Dear Meghan,

luggage fees depend on the bus company you are travelling with. Given the amount of your luggage, you will most probably have to pay an extra fee.

    Hello,

What is the maximum luggage allowed on your buses?

    • GetByBus Team   •     Author

I was planning to go from Zagreb to Milan 16th December at 16.30. Is it the same for this bus?

        • GetByBus Team   •     Author

Hi Alisher, yes for that bus you can take two suitcases without any problem and additional if there is space. Please note you have to pay 2 or 3 Euro per suitcase for the hold.

    Hello!
I would travel from Budapest to Zadar around 1st of July.
Is it possible to put my bicycle on the bus, disassembled, in a transport case, or paper carrying box?
Its a flat box, about 120*80*20cm size.
Do I have to pay extra fee?
I will have a backpack and a small suitcase, and the bike.
    Thank you:
    Csaba Both

    • Antonija Bosanac   •

Dear Csaba, it depends on the carrier. In most cases the bike transport is allowed for a small fee, but again, the fees are regulated by the bus company.
When you decide exactly when you want to travel, we will contact the bus company and check with them. Here is the link where you can see the departures from Budapest to Zadar: https://getbybus.com/en/bus-routes/budapest-3084/zadar-1505/2017-07-01

I will be travelling from Budapest to Belgrade, and I have 4(!) suitcases- 2 large and 2 small. Will this be a problem, is there usually room for this much luggage?

    • Antonija Bosanac   •

Hello, it shouldn’t be a problem to carry that much luggage, but you can expect to pay extra fees (luggage fees are paid per item and determined by bus companies).

  6. Lana   •

    Hi GetByBus Team,
I am planning on getting tickets for myself and my sister to travel from Split to Dubrovnik on 6 May and was looking at the 12.30 bus. We will have one item of luggage, will this bus have room underneath to take this?
I just don’t want to buy a ticket if they aren’t able to accommodate this.

    • Antonija Bosanac   •

      Hello Lana,
all intercity buses are well equipped and have luggage storage underneath, so don’t worry.

  7. Martina Valachová   •

    Hi,

I would like to travel from Bratislava to Zadar as return route in June. How does it work with big luggages ? Is there any measure or weight limit? Is the luggage and small bag or backpack included in a ticket or do I have to book my luggage to bus ticket ?

    Thank you

    • Antonija Bosanac   •

      Hello Martina,
luggage fees depend on the bus company you are travelling with.
Usually only a handbag is included and for other bags you have to pay a small fee, but sometimes companies even allow to carry one suitcase without charge.
I suggest you contact the bus company directly, just to be sure.
      Best,
      GBB Team

I would like to travel from Zagreb to pula with two children. Do i have to buy an adult ticket for my children or is there a special ticket for children?

    • Antonija Bosanac   •

      Dear Katrin,
Depending on the bus company you choose to travel with, there might be discounted tickets for children. There usually are.
If your kids are no more than 2 years old and will sit on your lap, then you don’t even need a separate ticket for them.

Hello Bus Team, I would like to take the bus from Zadar to Zagreb in August would it be advisable to purchase tickets already now online or should I wait like in July? Do the tickets go quickly?

    • Antonija Bosanac   •

      Dear Sir/Madam
Zadar-Zagreb bus connections are really frequent so you don’t have to purchase the tickets so much in advance.
The price, on the other hand, is always the same, so there isn’t much difference whether you buy the tickets now or later.
      Kindest regards,

  12. Helene   •

Hello Busteam. I am planning on travelling from Dubrovnik to Kotor in August, and on the app it says that ‘the bus does not allow additional luggage’ – does that mean that I am not allowed to bring my suitcase at all? Because it says so for all of the buses going to Kotor from Dubrovnik. If it is the case, is there an alternative way, so i can travel with my suitcase anyway?

    • GetByBus Team   •     Author

      Hi Helene

on the bus from Dubrovnik to Kotor, you can bring your suitcase, for adding it to the hold the bus company will charge you about 1 Euro.

You are also allow to bring your hand luggage free of charge

      Kindest regards

We are traveling from Dubronvik to Crikvenica on September 14th and see two departure times. Both say direct but I don’t see that per the map or any other Information. Need to know if there are any lunch/dinner stops as it is a 12 hour trip.

    • Melani Grubić Mikulić   •

      Dear Joan,

There will certainly be several shorter breaks and one longer break (around 30 minutes). ‘Direct’ means there will be no transfer to other buses.

I’m planning to travel from mostar to split on june 2018. when is the best time to book? like week before my trip or more?
also how much luggage am i allow to carry?
    thanks

    • GetByBus Team   •     Author

      Hi Rania,

the route Mostar to Split is not that busy in June, so if book a week before you should be fine, normally you can carry a handbag and two regular suitcases for the hold, which are subject to a charge of about 1 Euro a piece.

      Kindest regards

May I know how much the surcharge for each piece of luggage for the hold is?

I want to travel from Mostar to Budva on a route that does NOT goes through Croatia (due to visa issues). Is there a bus route that passes only through Bosnian and Montenegran territory? Travel date is first week of March 2018. Please advise.

Unfortunately, we have only those routes which pass through Croatia, so we do not have any information about the routes which pass only through Bosnian and Montenegrin territory.

Looking to travel from Medjugorje to Dubrovnik in September 2018 with a party of four.
    Questions:
    1) What size luggage will we be allowed to take?
    2) How many pieces?
    3) What is the cost for luggage?
    4) Is there only one bus per day from Medjugorje?
    5) What time does the bus leave from Medjugorje?
Thank you so much for your assistance.
    I

    • Melani   •

      Dear Mary,

If you have anything to place in the hold (suitcases, backpacks, large items), you will have to pay for it. Each piece costs approximately 1-2 euro (6-15 kuna), depending of the bus carrier, so keep some change close to hand whilst you get ready to board the bus.You will be given a little receipt with a number that corresponds with a sticker placed on your item(s) and it’s a good idea to hold onto this, just in case.
There is only one direct bus line from Medjugorje to Dubrovnik and it departs at 06:10. You can check more details about this route in the following link (https://getbybus.com/en/bus-medjugorje-to-dubrovnik).

Hi I’m looking at booking a return trip from Zadar to Zagreb for two people we will have our hand luggage (aeroplane sized) or possibly a suitcase and one hand luggage due to how long we are in Croatia for.

Would we be allowed to pay to put a larger suitcase in the hold? and would two hand luggage size: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm be allowed on free of charge?

    • Melani   •

      Dear Daisy,

If you have anything to place in the hold (suitcases, backpacks, large items), you will have to pay for it. Each piece costs approximately 1-2 euro (6-15 kuna), depending on the bus carrier, so keep some change close to hand whilst you get ready to board the bus. You will be given a little receipt with a number that corresponds with a sticker placed on your item(s) and it’s a good idea to hold onto this, just in case. If you want to put hand luggage in the overhead compartment, you’ll be free of charge. Weather a bag is accept as hand luggage or not depends on how full the bus is, and this is decision made by the driver

    Hi,

We are planning to travel from Zagreb to Dubrovnik by the 8:00 am bus. We are two people and we will have two backpacks, one hand luggage (trolley) and two luggages (medium sized trolleys).

Wanted to know if there will be any problem and what will be the cost per bag.

    Waiting for advise.

    Thanks.

    • Melani   •

      Dear Angkita ,

As I have already mentioned in other comments, if you have anything to place in the hold (suitcases, backpacks, large items), you will have to pay for it. Each piece costs approximately 6-15 kuna, depending of the bus carrier so I advise You to keep some change close to hand whilst you get ready to board the bus. You will be given a little receipt with a number that corresponds with a sticker placed on your item(s). It’s a good idea to hold onto this until the end of the journey, just in case. Anything that goes with you in the bus is free of charge (smaller backpacks, purse, etc.)

    Hello !

I notice there seems to be a bus from TANGIER (Morocco) to GRANADA (Spain).

How does the journey work ? After all, the Strait of Gibraltar has to be crossed from Tangier Port to Tarifa Port (Spain) and then onward to Granada ? Does the bus cross in a ferry ? If so, is it a large bus or a minivan sort of vehicle ? Where can I purchase tickets (for June travel ) ? It is not clear as to whether boarding the bus at Tangier would take me straight to granada >>>>>>>. Kindly someone help……Thanks.

Hi, I am arriving in Split Airport on the morning of 9th May. I would like to take a bus direct to Dubrovnik. Is there a bus from Split Airport direct to Dubrovnik or do I have to take a bus from the airport to the city centre first and take a bus from there to Dubrovnik? Is there a time-table for the bus concerned and what is the price?
Can I pay for the ticket on board the bus? By HRK or credit card?

    Thank you

    • Melani   •

      Dear Margaret,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to take a direct bus from Split Airport to Dubrovnik. First you’ll need to take a shuttle to the main bus station in Split and then take a direct bus to Dubrovnik. You can check all the available departures for that date on getbybus.com The ticket can be bought at the bus station, or you can simply buy it online on our website. Croatian kuna is the only accepted currency.

    Hi Team,

I will be traveling to Croatia in September’18. I want to travel from Split to Krka and then Krka to Zadar on the same day. Will stop at Krka National Park for 3-4 hours. I will have luggage as I will be changing the base city.
What is the best way ?

    • Melani   •

      Dear Mitali,

As far as I know, there is no official luggage storage in the very National park Krka. What I suggest is that You contact Skradin Tourist Board directly on their e-mail (info@skradin.hr). They should definitely have more information about this issue with luggage storage.

      Best regards!

    Dear GBB team,

I would like to know whether is it possible to load a bike as a luggage between Split and Makarska. Thing is I need to rent a road bike at Split, but I will be in Makarska so I need somehow to transport this rented bike as one peace ( no option for me to diassemble the bike). Payment is not a problem I just dont want to be refused on the spot 🙂
    Thanks for reply.

    • Melani   •

      Dear Michal,

Generally, it is not possible transportation of bikes, but it depends on the bus carrier. It depends on the number of passengers and on the availability of free space in the luggage department, so it is a bit tricky. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee You there will be space for Your bike. I suggest You pick the date and time of departure and we will try to check with the bus carrier if it’s possible to transport Your bike. In that case, please contact us on info@getbybus.com

Your tip to label your luggage when you use a shuttle was very helpful. I like how you said that the driver should put away your bags for you too. My husband is traveling out of town this week, and I am looking for an airport shuttle service to easily take him and his luggage to his hotel.

  35. Sara   •

    Hello,

    Today my nightmare came true.

I was traveling from Zagreb to Mostar with APZ Imotski-Autoherc. I completed all advisable tasks (added name tag to suitcase, kept valuables with self, got receipt, remembered compartment, kept an eye out).

Once I arrived in Mostar, I saw everyone take their luggage from below the bus only to realize that mine was missing.

The bus driver told me that one of the passengers who left at a stop halfway kept insisting on taking “two” rather than “one” piece of luggage. The driver gave in.

He told me this must have been my suitcase that this passenger took, and that I should now remain in Mostar until it may (or may not) get found one day.

The suitcase was full of memorable items which meant a lot to me. It breaks my heart that this happened, and I don’t know what to do now. All those things may be gone.

I can’t believe the staff gave away a second suitcase so easily. Can you please advise me what to do?

    Thanks,
    Sara

    Hello,

Me and my husband want to travel from Dubrovnik to Split in May 2019.

Firstly, would you recommend me buying tickets online now or closer to the time?

Secondly, as we will have flown to Dubrovnik from Manchester, we will each have luggage no more than 22kg in weight (one suitcase each), is this ok on that bus?

    Thank you.

    • Melani   •

      Dear Bwalya,

Bus departures from Dubrovnik to Split are regular entire year and the price of tickets are more or less the same, so there is no need to buy the ticket this early.
As for the luggage, there should be no problem with suitcases because shuttle buses are coaches with separate luggage compartment.

      Best regards,

    Hi,

My friends and I will be traveling by bus for our balkan trip.

Each of us will carry 1 big luggage (23kg) and 1 cabin luggage, is it OK in the bus?
I read that there will be extra fee for for these luggage around 10 kuna/piece, do they receive Euro as well or Kuna only?

our bus trip will be as follows :
    Zagreb to Zadar
    Zadar to Split
    Split to Dubrovnik

We are from Indonesia and hold a multiple entry Schengen Visa. We are wondering about would it be OK when we crossing border on our Split to Dubrovnik journey?

    Many thanks

    • Melani   •

      Dear Novitia,

Regarding luggage, any type of suitcases goes in the bottom compartment. Backpacks and purses can be taken into bus. Each piece which goes in the bottom compartment costs 10-14 kn, depending on the bus carrier (it can be paid only in kuna).
As for the issue with crossing the border, it would be best to contact directly the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the following e-mail address: mup@mup.ks.gov.ba

I am looking at booking the 10pm bus from Dubrovnik to Zagreb on 4th September arriving in Zagreb at 7am on 5th Sept, we are on an afternoon flight back to Australia on the 5th September and just wanted to make sure that this bus will be running, cant afford to have it cancelled and miss our flight. Can you Advise

    • Melani   •

      Dear Julie,

If there’s a bus ticket for that departure, then it means there will be a departure in that particular time. In case this specific departure gets cancelled for some reason (bad weather, etc.), you’ll be notified on time so that you can make changes on your booking.

  42. Larry   •

I was planning on renting a bike and biking from Split to Makarska, about 65 kilometres or so. On the way back, though, I would like to take a bus. Can I get my rental bike back to Split on the bus and if so, is there any additional cost to transport it?

    • Melani   •

      Dear Larry,

Bike transport in buses depends on the carrier but only off season. During summer season, bus carriers don’t do bicycle transport.

    Hi,

I am planning to travel from Kotor to Podgorica during middle of May. I have a bicycle luggage that weigh around 25kg and measures 129 x 109 x 45cm.

Would I be able to deposit my bicycle luggage in the hold for this journey? Any extra charges?

    Thanks.

    • Melani   •

      Dear Patrick,

If you have anything to place in the hold (suitcases, backpacks, large items), you will have to pay for it. Each piece costs approximately 1-2 euro (6-15 kuna), depending of the bus carrier, so keep some change close to hand whilst you get ready to board the bus.You will be given a little receipt with a number that corresponds with a sticker placed on your item(s) and it’s a good idea to hold onto this, just in case.

We want to travel from Rome to Pompeii in October 2019, so we are 3 people, so i guess we can take one suitcase each to go in the luggage compartment of the bus. ???

    • Melani   •

      Dear Rafael,

Yes, every passenger has the right to bring at least one suitcase in the luggage compartment. Additional fee for the luggage depends on the bus carrier, so you should check the details prior to your trip.

    Hello,

I want travel from Zadar to split, we have bring a big luggage, should I booking a space for luggage?
It yes, how to booking and pay?we do online purchase ticket, no see section for add luggage space?

    please advise..Thanks.

    • Antonia   •

      Dear Serene,
luggage fee might be charged for bigger luggage that goes into the hold of the bus and luggage fees depend on the bus company you are traveling with.
Usually only a handbag is included and for other bags you have to pay a small fee, but sometimes companies even allow to carry one suitcase without charge.
I suggest you contact the bus company directly and check with them, just to be sure.

      Best regards,

We would be travelling from Plitvice to Split in July.

The bus company Prijevoz KneževićPKN runs a bus at 9:30 am which takes 4 hours and 20 minutes.

Am not clear whether one suitcase in the luggage compartment and one in the hand luggage would be allowed per person.

Would like to confirm the same before we book the ticket.

    • Melani   •

      Dear Nidhi,

One larger suitcase in the luggage compartment and one hand luggage is allowed in bus from Plitvice to Split.

Hi, we need to catch the bus from Pula to Rovinj on the 27th June, 2019. Could you please confirm the addresses of the bus stations? We are 5 adults and 1 (4yr old) child with luggage each. Would you recommend the 10.35 or 11am bus as i see they are run by different companies so i am unsure which one would be best with all of our suitcases?

  49. Tyler Johnson   •

That’s a good idea to have a smaller bag with you for your valuables. I would think that would be a good way to not lose all the most expensive stuff if someone steals your suitcase. I’ll have to make sure that I keep my phone and laptop and stuff in a bag close to me if I decide to travel by bus.

  50. Russell   •

Can we take x2 bikes ( In Bike Bags ) on or under in the luggage department of the bus ? What would be the extra charge if this is possible?

      Dear Patrick,

Hi, i have booked 2 trips from getbybus. We have 3 persons, and each one has big luggage. Can we pay extra fee to the driver just before we get on the bus or contact the bus company to pay one day earlier? The size of luggage is 80*50*30 cm. Is there any limitation weight of the luggage?

    • Antonia   •

      Dear Gu Jiahui
There is no weight limit to the luggage that you can carry. If you have some luggage to place in the hold, you will have to pay a fee to the bus driver, for a regular suitcase on a national bus line the price is about 5-10 Kuna (0.65-1.30 Euro).

      Best regards,

That’a good idea to make sure you mark your luggage clearly so you can see it. I feel like that would be useful in determining which is your bag if someone has the same one. I’ll make sure I do that if I decide to take the bus to a shuttle, which would take me to the airport.

  58. Mészáros Emma   •

I am planning to bike tour Croatia starting September 18 in Zagreb. I’d like to get a bus from Rijeka to Pula on Sept 19 or 20; will the bus allow the bike to be stored in the under bus hold? I’m most willing to pay extra. I am planning to try and take the train from Zagreb to Rijeka on Sept 18 and then bus to Pula.

    • Maja   •

      Dear Leonard,

each bus company has its rules regarding bike transportations, so depending on which company you’re gonna travel with, I suggest you ask them directly.

I breaking my head about taking a bus from Sofia, Bulgaria to Skopje, North Macedonia. I am scare of getting lost at he bus terminal or taking the wrong bus. Could you, please tell me the steps on how to take the bus and not getting the wrong one.

    • GetByBus Team   •     Author

      Hi Alexandra,

You have nothing to worry about, the main bus terminal in Sofia, has an information pult as well as electronic displays showing from which platform number buses departure. Just make sure to be at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time so that you have time find the right bus.

To be extra sure, you could also show the driver your ticket and ask him if it is the correct bus, he might not speak english, but i think he will be able to answer yes or no to that question.

We wish you a pleasant trip

  63. Andi   •

Hello! I would like to travel with NationalExpress from London Luton Airport to Portsmouth University on 26 feb.
Could you help me with some information about the luggages I can have with me? I will have a big luggage of 32 kg, a smaller one of 10 kg and a hand lugguage (like a schoolbag). Can I buy a standard ticket or do I need to add some extra bags to my booking? it is ok if i have a luggage of 32 kg?

    • Maja   •

      Hi Andi,

National Express has all the regulations about luggage listed on their website. I suggest you take a look.
In your case, you would need to add extra luggage when booking your ticket, as the limit is 20 kg per item.

      Best,

  64. Chiara Sbrollini   •

Hi, we are 6 girls and we would like to take a bus from split to Novalja but we don’t know how many baggage we can bring with us, is there a limit of number or weight?

    • Antonia   •

      Dear Chiara,

Small hand luggage can be placed in the space above your seat for free, and the bigger items (suitcases, backpacks, large items) will have to be placed in the hold, you will have to pay a small fee for it. The price per item is approximately 1-2 euro (7-15 kuna), depending on the bus carrier, so keep some change close, while you get ready to board the bus.
GetByBus is just a intermediary in online ticket purchase, we are selling tickets only for passengers and the amount of luggage depends on the number of people on the bus.

  65. Hayk   •

HI. I would like to know if there are some limitations or regulations concerning the quantity of the luggage? I mean if it is possible to have 5 pieces? Do I have to pay extra?
Second question – is it enough only COVID-19 test negative result?
    Thank You in advance.

    • Maja   •

      Hi Hayk,

each bus carrier has its own regulations regarding luggage transport. Therefore, it is best to contact the bus carrier you’re going to travel with.
Regarding the COVID-19 testing, that depends on where do you travel (in which country). To find out the latest COVID-19 regulations, visit the official government website of the country you’re travelling to.

    Hi

I am going to travel from Gothenburg, Sweden to Hamburg, Germany by Felix bus. I will pay for an extra luggage. So I will have 2 luggages(each 20 kg). I am a bit worried if there is enough space for both luggages in hold place? Also is it safe enough to have them in bus hold space? I am very concerned about that.

    • Maja   •

      Hi Mina,

putting your luggage in a holding place shouldn’t be a problem, but it also depends on the number of passengers and their luggage on that departure.
We suggest you contact the bus company to check these details before your departure.

      Best,
      GBB Team
