Cheapest bus routes in Croatia
As in many other European countries, the Croatian long distance bus market is also seeing and increased competition between the operators, as a consumer this is of course great news, as the result of the increased competition is lower ticket prices.
On which routes has the price decreased?
In terms of domestic long distance routes, the greatest price decreases has been on the routes between Zagreb and Split and Zagreb and Rijeka (and the opposite direction), here tickets are about 50% cheaper than two years ago. In real number this means that you can now travel from Zagreb to Split for about 100 kuna (14 Euro), if you buy your ticket early online, the price could even be as little as 80 Kuna (10.5 Euro) for a one way adult ticket, between Zagreb and Rijeka the online price is as little as 50 Kuna (7 Euro).
Prices from and to Germany, Austria and Switzerland has also decreased, especially between Munich and Zagreb and Vienna and Zagreb prices has dropped a lot, regular ticket price between Munich and Zagreb is now about 60 Euro and online camping prices down to as little as 25 Euro for a one way adult ticket. Between Vienna and Zagreb campaign prices has been down to 15 Euro on some weekdays.
Will ticket price continue to drop?
Well that is of course hard to say, if you convert the above mentioned prices into price per 100 km, the price level for routes above is the same as the online prices you currently see on the most competitive European markets, which could indicate that there not much room for any further decreases, that being said, there will probably still be campaign’s and special travel days offers which could make specific departures considerable cheaper.
In terms of other popular routes in Croatia, like e.g. buses to and from Plitvice lakes, buses between Split and Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar as well as Zadar and Zagreb, prices might decrease some, but as there is less completion on these routes, you probably will not reach the same price per 100 km as we now have between Zagreb and Split.
Will the decreasing prices lead to less safety?
One could assume that the increasing competition would lead to a lack on passenger safety, but for now it actually looks like it has to opposite effect, as bus companies seams to be continuously lowering the average fleet age, with new and modern long distance buses.
