Airports in Illinois

Illinois state has a significant number of international airports. Naturally, Chicago airports are the ones with main passenger focus. Nevertheless, there are other medium-sized and small airports available when visiting this state. In total, there are 11 Illinois airports offering commercial flights, as classified by FAA. O’Hare Airport and Midway Airport are the busiest, followed by Moline Airport. As for the airlines, all the major US airlines operate at bigger airports, while smaller (regional) airlines serve the smaller airports. Chicago O’Hare International Airport is the main airport in Illinois, also known as just O’Hare Airport. ORD airport is currently the 6th busiest airport in the world, as well as in the top 3 busiest US airports. Airport has 4 huge terminals and more than 190 gates, so getting around the airport can take some time. O’Hare is one of three airports serving Chicago, other main being Midway Airport. Airport is located about 23 km from Chicago Downtown. It is a major hub for United Airlines and American Airlines, but also offers flights from some budget carriers. There are hundreds of daily flights from and to the airport, but NYC and LA are top connected destinations. As for the ground transportation, there are several ways of getting to Chicago city and its surrounding area.

Chicago Midway Airport is the second major airport serving Chicago, and the closest airport to the city. Airport is located about 13 km from Chicago’s business district. Southwest Airlines is the main carrier at the airport, while Atlanta and Denver are top destinations. Midway Airport has a huge terminal with 3 concourses, with construction work currently expanding the airport area. Chicago Transit Authority offers public transportation to the airport (Orange Line). There are, of course, airport shuttles, taxis and car rentals available.
