Mexico City Airport, officially known as Benito Juárez International Airport, serves Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. It is located about 5 km from Mexico City downtown with several options to get to and from the airport. MEX Airport is the busiest airport in Mexico but also one of the top 50 busiest in the world with around 50 million passengers per year. Passenger movement and cargo traffic has doubled in the last decade. The airport offers flights to more than 100 destinations on four continents, with the most popular international flights arriving from Spain, the UK, Germany, Canada and the USA.

How to get from Mexico City Airport to Mexico City

With a short distance of only a few kilometers, MEX Airport offers multiple ways of transportation between the airport and the city. Find out all the ways of getting to and from the airport in the text below.

Bus

There are several bus lines operating the airport. They take passengers to Mexico City and other destinations such as Cuernavaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Toluca and Orizaba. These bus lines operate 24/7. Tickets range from around €8 to €20, depending on the route. 

These routes are operated by various companies such as Estrella Blanca, Estrella Roja, Primera Plus etc.

There are two bus terminals at the airport where passengers can wait for buses, at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Note: Passengers in transit can travel between the terminals by Aerotren which operates from 05:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Metrobus

Metrobus is a public transport service that operates between the airport and Mexico City downtown, as well as other points of interest such as Paseo de la Reforma Boulevard, the Bellas Artes building etc.

Metrobus Line 4 connects the airport and the city centre. The line makes a stop at San Lázaro station from where you can continue by metro service. Passengers can board the Metrobus at two stations, at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. 

The line operates throughout the whole year, from 04:30 am to 00:00 am (Mon-Sat) and from 05:00 am to 00:00 (Sun & holidays).

A regular single ticket costs about €1. Passengers need to buy a Metrobus smart card at sales or machines at T1 and T2 boarding areas.

Metro

It is also possible to travel from the MEX Airport to the city by metro (subway). The closest metro station to the airport is Terminal Aérea Station where Line 5 operates. It is located only a few minutes walk from Terminal 1, on Boulevard Puerto Aéreo.

Metro service operates from 05:00 am to 00:00 am (Mon-Fri), from 06:00 am to 00:00 am (Sat) and 07:00 am to 00:00 am (Sun). 

A regular single ticket costs around €0,20 but you can also buy a card for around €0,40 for multiple rides.

Note: Luggage is not allowed in the metro.

Taxi

If you don’t like using public transport or carry a lot of luggage, taking a taxi might be an alternative option. However, we suggest you always look for a taxi service that is authorized by the Communications and Transport Authority (SCT Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes). Some of the taxi companies include Porto Taxi, Sitio 300 and Nueva Imagen. You will find taxi services at T1 and T2, tickets are bought at the modules located close to the arrival gates, prices are posted next to them.

Transfer

Another way to travel from MEX Airport is with a private, door-to-door transfer directly to your accommodation in the city. You can pre-book a transfer for a hassle-free experience, a professional driver will wait for you at the airport and take you to your destination.

Car hire at Mexico City Airport

For those who prefer to explore the area on their own, the best option would be a car hire directly at the airport. You will find offices of several rental agencies in the T1 and T2 arrivals area. However, you can always rent a car online and avoid potential queues at the airport.

Renting a bus

Larger groups of passengers should consider renting a bus at the airport. However, it is recommended to book it online, so the bus rental companies have enough time to advise you on the meeting point and all other information.
