Tocumen International Airport is the international airport serving Panama City, the capital of Panama. Tocumen is the largest airport in Panama and serves as the regional hub for flights to and from The Caribbean, South, North and Central America. In addition to this, the airport offers several flights to Europe as well.
During World War II, several airports were built around the Panama Canal to protect it from foreign attacks. Even tho it began its operations prior to opening, Tocumen was officially opened in 1947. However, with Panamas’ increasing role as a transit country, the old airport building soon became too small. For this reason, the construction of a new airport building began in 1971.
The new building was inaugurated in 1978 and is still used as a passenger terminal. While the old building is being used as a cargo terminal today.
