The climate in Zurich is a combination of continental and oceanic climate with warm summers and cold winters. The warmest month is July when the highest average temperature is 24°C and in winter, temperatures often drop below zero. Zurich weather is typical for the seasons, from cold and snowy winter to sunny summer days. However, that is why you can visit Zurich anytime, since it has all four distinct seasons.

If planning to visit Zurich, we present you a guide with all the necessary information about the city that will help you organize your trip in detail!

Getting to Zurich

Zurich is a highly developed city, therefore it is a hub for nearly all means of transport. It is well-connected to other cities in Switzerland, as well as the rest of Europe. Here is how to get to Zurich by different means of transport.

By Plane

Zurich Airport is the largest and busiest airport in the country. Also known under the name Kloten, the airport is located 10 km north of Zurich city center. It serves as a hub for Swiss International Airline, and there are numerous other airlines that provide flights to and from the airport, such as British Airways, easyJet, Vueling and Turkish Airlines. You can easily get from the airport to the center by using public transport (train, bus) or airport shuttle bus.

By Train

Getting to Zurich by train is easy as it has a developed railway system and Zurich train station (Zurich HB) is the largest and busiest in the country, making the city a railway hub. It is located in central Zurich, at the northern end of the city core. From the main train station there are connections to other cities across Switzerland, as well as connections to other European countries such as Germany, Austria, France and Italy.

By Bus

With train being the most efficient way of intercity and international transport, bus transport is less popular. Still, Zurich is connected to numerous cities across Switzerland (Basel, Lausanne, Geneva)  and to almost every country in Europe (Milan, Vienna, Munich, Ljubljana…). Zurich bus station (Shilquai) is located 1.5 km from the city center, north of the main train station.

Switzerland Visa Requirements

Switzerland is a member of the Schengen Area, meaning that all EU visitors can enter the country without applying for a visa. If you’re a citizen of a country which is not a member of the Schengen Area, you will need to apply for a visa regarding the purpose of your travel. If travelling as a tourist you can apply for a short-term visa (Schengen visa) up to 90 days. For all other travelling purposes for non-Schengen Area citizens read the visa requirements

Public transport in Zurich

Exploring Zurich is the best on foot as the city is not that big, but in the case of bad weather or any other conditions that require quick and safe transport, Zurich public transport consists of buses, trams, trains and boats. All public transportation companies belong to Zurich Transportation Network (ZVV), a well-developed city system, making the cars more of a burden to get around in Zurich.

Bus

There is a network of bus lines in the canton of Zurich but they are mainly used in areas where trains are not operating. Buses are not operating in the city center of Zurich but they start in peripheral areas and take you to locations outside of the canton. Check the map of routes

Tram

Tram is the main way of transport in central Zurich, being supplemented by the Zurich S-Bahn, buses and trolleybuses. Trams are mainly operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ). Check the map of routes

Train

It is good to mention that there is no subway or metro in Zurich, although there is a part of the railway that passes through the tunnel. Zurich S-bahn covers the entire canton of Zurich with some connections to areas around. Train service is divided into 1st and 2nd class, and it is important which class ticket you buy because if travelling in the wrong class, you will get fined.

Boat

Since Zurich is situated on the Zurich lake, boats are also a part of the public transportation network. Boats will surely give you an entirely different perspective of the city, so taking a boat trip can be a great addition to your trip.

Ticket System

The whole Zurich transport system is divided into zones, so it is recommended to buy tickets for zones rather than rides. Zurich city belongs to the Zone 110, tickets are bought at the stations, from the ticket machines and you can choose between a 1-hour ticket and a Day Card that lets you travel countless times within a zone, within the given time frame.

If staying in Zurich for a longer period of time, consider buying a Zurich Card which allows you to travel freely within the zones 110, 111, 121, 140, 150, 154 and 155. Besides that, the ticket also includes the transfer between the city and the airport, as well as trip to Uetilberg.

There are also other tickets for different travel needs such as Zone upgrade, Night supplement and other tickets you can buy to save some extra money.

NOTE: Have in mind that zones are not circular, so some locations such as the airport do not belong to the Zone 110. We suggest you always check in which zone is your desired destination and always bring your tickets with you since the controls are often and strict.

You should also have in mind that all public transport in Switzerland is free and unlimited when possessing a Swiss Travel Pass. The pass is allowing you to enjoy the rides without additional payments, gives you discounts for visiting certain locations and offers free entrance to museums. Moreover, children are allowed to travel for free.

Parking in Zurich

As already stated, getting around Zurich by car is not the best option since the public transportation network is really strong. Of course, if your desire is to be mobile and explore the area on your own, the best option is to rent a car while staying in Zurich.

Regarding the parking in Zurich, have in mind that parking regulations are very strict and if you don’t follow them, you can expect big fines. Finding a parking lot might be a challenging mission, but it is not impossible. Parking places are divided into categories and you will recognize them by their color. White zones generally let you stay up to 4 hours from Monday to Saturday, between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm, but not the entire city has the same rules. Blue zones let you park 1 hour for free from Monday to Saturday, between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm. Parking in blue zones requires having a ‘parking disk’ in your car. You can also park in 1 of 10 park-houses in Zurich.
