Krka Waterfalls in Autumn
The National park Krka with its waterfalls has become increasingly popular in the last year; like Plitvice national park, Krka is also a great place to visit in autumn, where you will find beautiful colors and rapidly flowing waterfalls. The National park Krka has 5 entrances, the main entrances are Lozovac and Skradin while other, less used ones, are Roški slap, Kistanje / Krka Monastery and Burnum / Puljane.

Tips for visiting Krka waterfalls in autumn:
When to visit: If you have visited Krka waterfalls in the summer months you will know that it can be really crowded; in autumn, especially from October on-wards, you will have no problems with crowds blocking the walking paths 🙂 If you are looking to take some great autumn color pictures of the nature, best time to visit is probably end September till end October, the photos in this post are from my visit in mid October.
Entrances open in autumn: When visiting Krka in autumn you should pay attention to the following in relation to where you should enter the National park. The boats from Skradin to Skradinski Buk as well as the boat from Roški slap to Skradinski Buk sail from April to October. If you enter in Lozovac, you have a bus from the parking lot downhill to the ethno village during September and October; in November there is no bus so you are allowed to drive down to the ethno village. Also Kistanje (Krka Monastery) and Burnum are closed from November 1st.
What to wear for an autumn visit: Until mid October, the temperature on most days is above 20 degrees, so in this period you can mostly wear a summer “uniform”, for the rest of the autumn period it can be quite a bit colder, so check the forecast before going. As the walking paths are all covered with wooden planks, a pair of sneakers is more than fine as footwear.
Entrance fees in autumn: Few years ago the entrance fee for National park Krka waterfalls used to be 30-40% less than the entrance fee for the National park Plitvice Lakes, but nowadays both parks have similar pricing structure; however, in September and October an adult ticket costs 110 kn and in November 30 kuna.
Not open in autumn: From November to March it is not possible to visit Visovac Island, the Krka monastery and Oziđana pećina cave. Swimming at Skradinski Buk is allowed till 1st of October.
Getting to Krka in autumn:
Krka by car: The easiest way of getting to Krka waterfalls is by car, the two main entrances in Skradin and Lozovac are 15-20 minutes from the dalmatian highway. In Lozovac there is free parking, in Skradin you will have to pay for the parking.
From Split there is a driving distance of about 95 km and a travel time of 1 hour 15 minutes.
From Zadar there is a driving distance of about 75 km and a travel time of 1 hour.
From Šibenik there is a driving distance of 20-25 km and a travel time of 30 minutes.
Krka by bus: Reaching Krka waterfalls National park (Skradin entrance) by bus is also possible in autumn, although the number of daily departures decreases the closer you get to winter. The 2 main bus routes to Krka are:
- Split to Krka waterfalls, driving time by bus is 1 hour and 30 minutes, you can see bus departures here.
- Zadar to Krka waterfalls, driving time by bus is around 1 hour, you can see bus departures here.
The buses stop close to the national park ticket office in Skradin, which is close to where the boats towards Skradinski Buk depart. Travelling to the entrance in Lozovac is only possible with regional buses from Šibenik.
Organized tours to Krka: From Split and Zadar you have organized daytrips every day till the end of October; from November 1st onwards you might have departures on certain weekdays. As an alternative, you also have the option to arrange a private transfer from e.g Split to Krka and eventually plan a return trip with additional stops e.g. in Šibenik, Primošten and Trogir.
Accommodation at Krka waterfalls in autumn:
During September and beginning of October, staying overnight in Skradin is certainly something to consider, the town is very nice and along the waterfront – Riva – there are several smaller restaurants and coffee bars with outdoor seating. If you just need somewhere to sleep, you can also find accommodation near Lozovac and other areas around the national park, at this time of year everything should be quite affordable.
