Visit National park Fruska gora
Fruska gora is the biggest mountain in Vojvodina province, not far from Novi Sad, and since 1960 it has also been one of 5 national parks of Serbia.
The mountain is about 80 kilometres long, and probably 90 million years old. Scientists like to call it ‘the mirror of geological past’ because of many animal fossils found on the mountain.
The name ‘Fruska’ derives from the old slavic name Frug, which is a synonym for an old germanic tribe, Franks. This obviously means that Fruska gora actually stands for ‘the mountain of Franks’.

What to do at National park Fruska gora?
Fruska gora is the best place for those who like to explore nature and enjoy fresh mountain air, since it has numerous marked hiking trails.
The biggest hiking trail is the one for the marathon of Fruska gora which passes through the majority of villages and mostly all the mountain huts are located on this trail.
The marks are, in general, put on trees, shaped like a white circle with a heart, so stick to these marks and you won’t wander off.
The national park is filled with monasteries, 35 of them to be precise, built in the period from the 15th to 18th century. Here is the list of a few you could check during your visit to Fruska gora:
- Vrdnik – located at the entrance of the homonymous village, dedicated to the ascension of Christ. It has been demolished and renewed a couple of times, and today’s facade is made in classicist style.
- Jazak – dedicated to st. Nicholas, constructed in the second half of the 16th century. The walls of the church are painted with frescos from the 18th century. The church was inhabited by the Russian nuns until 1943, when the monastery became abandoned.
- Petkovica – location of this monastery is breathtaking since it is situated on a slope by the stream. It has been destructed a few times in the past, and it was built disproportionately during the renovation, which gives this monastery special significance
Lakes: After long walking and sightseeing of monasteries, we recommend visiting one of 16 artificial lakes of Fruska gora, where you can take a swim during the summer, or even fish, since it is not prohibited. Lake Borkovac is particular because it has the so-called ‘aqua camp’ with 4 huts, and a beach.
Resorts: If you plan to spend a few days in the national park Fruska gora, you can camp at one of numerous resorts that this park offers. Most of them are nicely decorated, with tables and benches to have a picnic in beautiful nature.
- Borkovac resort: After taking a swim at lake Borkovac, you can rest at Borkovac resort, not far away from the lake. In this resort you can find restaurants, bars and a hotel surrounded by pines. Those who want to workout have at their disposal the wooden exercise ‘machines’
